Bars Are US Census / USITC General Imports From India, Calendar 2024. Colour Marks Who Bears A Tariff — The Indian Exporter (Replaceable Goods), Or The American Buyer Too (Goods That Are America’s Own Brands Made In India, Or That India Cannot Be Replaced On). The Breakdown: Where The Tariff Actually Lands
61%
Americans Pay Too
$51.2bn Of India’s $83.4bn In US-Bound Exports (95% Of All, Across 36 Categories) Is Trade Where The US Buyer Shares Or Bears The Tariff.
45%
It’s America’s Own Economy
$37.4bn Is America’s Own Brands And Supply Chains, Made In India — iPhones, Cut Diamonds, The APIs Behind Its Generics.
17%
No Substitute Exists
$13.8bn Has No Alternative Supplier — Generics, Carpets, Cumin, Guar Gum. The Tariff Is Simply Added To The American Price.
39%
India’s To Absorb
$32.2bn Is Replaceable — Apparel, Machinery, Steel, Plastics, Aluminium. Here A Tariff Stops At India, And Most Of The Long Tail Sits Here.
43%
The Big Three Aren’t India’s Problem
India’s Three Largest Exports — Gems, Electronics, Pharma ($35.5bn) — Are All Ones Americans Pay The Tariff On.
~47%
The Sharpest Squeeze
India Fills Nearly Half Of US Generic Prescriptions By Volume; A 100% Tariff Would Roughly Double Their Landed Cost.

Coverage. These 36 Categories Are ~$83bn — About 95% Of India’s $87.3bn In Goods Exports To The US In 2024. The Top 15 (First Chart, Full Scale) Are 81%; The Next 21 (Second Chart, Own Scale, Estimated ±15%) Add The Rest. Note The Shift: Within The Top 15, Americans Pay 71% — But Across All 36 It Is 61%, Because The Long Tail Is Mostly Replaceable Commodities India Can Be Undercut On. Box Shares Are Of The 36 Shown, So They Reconcile: ~61% Americans Pay ≈ 45% Shared + 17% Irreplaceable. Category Values Are CY2024; 2025 Looks Different — Diamond Exports Fell Sharply And Electronics Rose.

How 2025 Already Moved — And Why We Chart 2024

2025 Is The Tariff Year, So Its Trade Is Already Distorted — Rushed In Early, Then Slumping. That Is Why The Charts Above Use 2024, The Last Clean Baseline. But The Shift Is Itself The Story:

All Goods Exports To The US
$87.3 → $103.8bn
▲ +19%
Front-Loaded Ahead Of The Tariffs — Stockpiling, Not Organic Growth.
Electronics & Phones
$12.1 → $30.5bn
▲ +152%
iPhone Assembly Moved To India — Now Its Single Biggest Export.
Gems & Jewellery
$12.4 → $6.6bn
▼ -47%
Cut-Diamond Exports Nearly Halved — Tariffs And A Demand Slump.
Pharmaceuticals
$11 → $15.3bn
▲ +39%
Generics Rushed In Ahead Of A Threatened Pharma Tariff.
Mineral Fuels
$5.1 → $3.4bn
▼ -32%
Refined-Fuel Shipments Dropped.

2025 Category Figures Are UN COMTRADE (CIF-Basis, Final Full-Year); The 2024 Baseline Is US Census (Customs). Each 2025 Value Carries A ~4% Freight Uplift, But The Direction And Scale Of Every Move Hold. Electronics Alone (+$18bn) More Than Accounts For The Rise In The Total.

What The Chart Says
A Tariff On India Is Mostly A Tariff On Americans. The Instinct Is That Tariffs Punish The Exporter. But For India, That Only Holds On The Replaceable Third — The Shirts, Machine Parts And Steel The US Can Buy From Vietnam Or Mexico. The Other 71% By Value Runs The Other Way. Some Of It Is America’s Own Economy Wearing An Indian Label — The IPhones Assembled Near Chennai, The Diamonds Cut In Surat For US Jewellers, The Auto Parts Feeding Detroit. The Rest Is Simply Irreplaceable — Half Of America’s Generic Prescriptions, Most Of Its Carpets, Nearly All Its Cumin. Tax Either And The Bill Comes Back Home. Shared Is Not A Soft Middle; It Is Just As Acute As The Irreplaceable Column — In Both, The American Pays.

The Numbers
Bar Values Are US Census Bureau / USITC DataWeb General Imports From India, Calendar Year 2024, Grouped By HS Chapter (Total $87.3bn; The Top 15 Shown = $70.6bn). Top-10 Chapters Are Firm; Ranks 11–15 Are Smaller Chapters With Approximate Values.
Who Pays
Each Export Is Marked By Who Bears A Tariff: The Indian Exporter (Replaceable Goods), Or The American Buyer Too — Because The Good Is America’s Own Brand / Supply Chain Made In India, Or Because India Cannot Be Replaced (Dependency Figures: Pharma ~47% Of US Generic Prescriptions By Volume — IQVIA, 2022; Carpets ~83%, Cumin ~92%). This Is An Editorial Read Of The Trade Structure.
